Mayor Seeks Advise On How To Restrict Penn’s Casino
Since residents of Ohio voted to allow four casinos to be built in the state, The Mayor of Columbus has made it clear that he will fight the development of a casino by Penn National Gaming (PENN: 24.01 -0.17%), which he has already made several attempts to do.
However Penn has also said they refuse to give up their constitutional rights to build the casino in the Arena District of Columbus.
The constitutional amendment known as Issue 3 was approved in the November election, however 58% of Franklin County residents, where the site of the proposed casino is to be built, voted against the issue.
A newly formed citizen group, Casino-Free Columbus has joined the Mayor in the fight to deter the casino.
The Mayor has requested the city attorney’s office to provide an advisory position on his authority to restrict the casino. City approval will be required to obtain a building permit.
State lawmakers have five months remaining to create an Ohio Casino Control Commission to govern the four casinos.
Questions have been raised since Penn has yet to purchase the property specified for the Columbus casino, however company officials say they plan to wait until a casino license has been awarded before purchasing the property and beginning construction, which is not expected for many months.
