After five years in the making and phased grand openings of non-gaming facilities this month, MGM Mirage (MGM: 11.89 +3.03%) opens the centerpiece of the $8.5 billion City Center complex.

The Aria Resort and Casino is a 61 story, 4,000 room resort with a 150,000 square foot casino and entertainment venue featuring several fine restaurants and a luxury spa.

The Resort and Casino’s official unveiling took place at a press conference Wednesday afternoon with about 400 media present.

A special VIP reception followed Wednesday evening inside the resort-casino with another 5,000 guest in attendance.

A Massive firework display took place from on-top of the hotel tower before being opened to the public at about midnight.

MGM Mirage Chairman and CEO Jim Murren told press, “Our opening symbolizes a true recovery here. It symbolizes the reliance of our community here, of our ability to persevere, our ability to never give up and our sense of resolve. Whether you live in Summerlin or Green Valley, wherever you live, this is a symbol of hope and recovery and a better year in 2010.”
