MGM Resorts International (MGM: 10.40 -4.67%) released a statement on Wednesday defending the 13 year old tradition of displaying live lions at the MGM Grand after guest posted video footage of last week’s attack on YouTube.

“Incidents where animal handlers are bitten are very rare,” said MGM spokesman Gordon Absher, adding that MGM “upholds the highest safety standards at all times.”

MGM has been forced to defend its exhibit after an animal trainer was bitten by a lion in front of guests on September 1 and the amateur video filmed by a guest later received coast to coast coverage by the media outlet.

MGM said that the trainer was in “good health” and luckily only required stitches after the incident.

MGM also said that the lions and the trainers are provided by an “expert” with “more than 30 years” of experience in the field and that the lions are brought in one day per week on rotating shifts.
