The new casino in Behlehem, Pennsylvania owned by Las Vegas Sands (LVS: 15.54 0.00%) is creating millions in fees and revenue for the surrounding towns and counties. The Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem has only just started operating, but estimates are that impact fees will pay close to $10 million to the regional governments.

The impact fees will allow local governments to fund road projects and staff police forces to deal with the crowds drawn by the casino. Those charges are in addition to the huge tax revenues generated by the casino.

The impact fees will start being paid by Sands next month into county accounts.

Pennsylvania is perhaps the most successful state in the US in operating and regulating gambling. Revenues have consistently climbed, even after the onset of the recession. And the marriage of horse racing to slot machines, so turbulent in other states, has led to a prosperous partnership in Pennsylvania.

Las Vegas Sands committed to opening the Bethlehem gaming venue, setting aside other projects when cash became scarce, and so far the extraordinary income and crowds indicate the decision was well-made.
